The Leadership Theatre Program with The Greenpoint Youth Court

GPYC  Black Moon Theatre Company is thrilled about its new partnership with the Greenpoint Youth Court a program for young people aged 10-18 who are referred by local schools, community organizations and police for offenses such as assault, shoplifting, vandalism, and truancy. These young people appear before a judge and jury of their peers - other neighborhood teens - who determine fair and appropriate responses. Black Moon Theatre Company Leadership Theatre Program in partnership emphasizes responsibility by teaching young people that actions have consequences and leadership by-teaching young people how to be leaders within their peer community. The Leadership Theatre Program is a series of workshops, using theater tools, based on real-life situations whereby teenagers participate in role playing and writing exercises to express themselves and develop critical life skills. The Leadership Theatre Program aims to create a positive, creative environment in which teenagers seek resolution through positive role modeling, recognition, encouragement, support and coaching.

The Power of Mask Theatre

Commedia Black Moon Theatre Company has developed an interactive program specifically for teens in an educational setting, using Commedia Dell'Arte technqiues to engage young people while teaching theatre and life skills. Adolescence is a time of great turmoil and anxiety for most teenagers. This workshop offers students a way of expressing themselves through theatre, affording them the ability to step outside of themselves to better express their emotions, to keep in touch with their expressiveness and sense of play, and to enable them to move forward intellectually.

"This group has been part of the North Brooklyn landscape for ten years and has truly contributed to the artistic development of the neighborhood, with their youth program, and their breathtaking and original performances.”                                            Joe Lentol, Assemblyman 50th District, Kings County

The program meets the New York Curriculum Theater Benchmarks in Acting, Play writing/Play Making, Theater Literacy, and Working with Theater professionals in the School.
