YMCA EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH PROGRAM  -  Read Curriculum

Black Moon Theatre Company is a pioneering organization recognized in the North Brooklyn community for creating programs that connect youth with the arts. We settled in the Greenpoint/Williamsburg area of Brooklyn, New York, a traditionally under-served community in the arts. Our Educational Outreach Program was launched in January, 2002 at the Greenpoint YMCA’s After-School Program. This program is a year-long working with children 5-12 years old and introduces them to physical theatre and discovering how to be comfortable and aware of their own non-verbal physicality and gestures. Each class is one hour and a half, weekly and teaches the basics of performance theatre. This program empowers children to liberate their creative imaginations and with this creativity, we will present two productions per school year. Our goal is to replicate this program and expand it to other local schools.

This year BMTC is branching out to more community-based youth organizations throughout Brooklyn, for example to El Puente Leadership Center, a community center in Williamsburg that serves primarily young people and their families. The Center has a membership after-school and weekend program.

An extension of our Educational Outreach Program is our Summer Youth Program. This program is six weeklong sessions that allows North Brooklyn parents to offer their children a dynamic summer experience. This program was developed directly from expressed needs of the community, using results from a questionnaire distributed throughout the area. New programs allow Black Moon Theatre Company to continue its focus on its social and educational mission and offer a fun and structured way for kids of all ages to explore their artistic and creative impulses. This program offers acting games, body movement exercises and a final performance allowing our students to demonstrate their abilities to express their own ideas and emotions. The programs teachers are arts education instructors and trained company members who have dedicated themselves to artistically, ethnically, and socially diverse theatre.
